Mold cleaning

Before you start cleaning the mold from the room, it is advisable to ensure the room is well ventilated. It is also of great importance that you wear a mask, gloves and cover your eyes during the cleaning process. If the mold covers a small surface area, it is fairly easy to clean the mold with detergent and water. Allow the space to dry and then apply a solution of 1/2-cup bleach per gallon of water to kill the remaining spores. Never combine bleach and ammonia because the mixture produces a toxic gas. There are products available that are designed specifically for mold, which can help you, deal effectively with this smelly problem. Preventive measures can be taken to ensure the mold does not return and you can do this by eliminating the underlying problems that caused it.

Mold Removal Methods

If your mold problem is very severe, you may need to consider hiring professional help offered by several established mold remediation companies, who will do a good job of cleaning up your personal space for you. It is necessary for good health and hygiene that inhabitants of a mold-infested house avoid breathing in mold or mold spores. In order to limit exposure to airborne mold, those homeowners resorting to treating the mold themselves may want to wear an N-95 respirator, available at many hardware stores and from companies that advertise on the Internet. These respirators cost about $12 to $25 each. Some N-95 respirators resemble a paper dust mask with a nozzle on the front; others are made primarily of plastic or rubber and have removable cartridges that trap most of the mold spores from entering. In order to be effective, the respirator or mask must fit properly, so carefully follow the instructions supplied with the respirator. A second precaution would be to wear long gloves that extend to the middle of the forearm, which provide protection and adequate coverage. Also recommended, when working with water and a mild detergent, are the ordinary household rubber gloves, which can be a good substitute too.

Some precautions during mold cleaning

If the homeowner is using a disinfectant, a biocide such as chlorine bleach, or a strong cleaning solution, the use of relevant gloves- made from natural rubber, neoprene, nit rile, polyurethane, or PVC- is recommended, as one should avoid touching mold or moldy items with bare hands. Wearing goggles that do not have ventilation holes is a good precaution too, as these help reduce possibilities of getting mold or mold spores in your eyes.

Clean mold

If a homeowner takes up the task of cleaning any mold, the foremost thing to keep in mind is that basic personal protection equipment such as rubber gloves, eye protection and high-quality pollen or dusk mask be worn.

Locating mold to be cleaned

Mold can develop in places that have excess moisture and lumber seems to be an ideal resting place for collection of fungal spores on the surface of the wood. This kind of mold requires wet wiping and scrubbing to remove it, but simply wiping the wood can release spores into the surrounding air. So, the safer and preventive approach is to gently spray or wet down the mold prior to the removal.

Products for cleaning mold

Help is at hand for all suffering from mold and it's damaging effects on personal hygiene, health and home equipment as there are numerous products available, ranging from common bleach to commercial mildewcides (pesticides for mildew, specifically), which are promoted for cleaning mold from wood. The U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) suggests using a mild detergent and water for most molds clean up. It recommends wet vacuuming the area, wiping or scrubbing the mold with detergent and water and, after drying, vacuuming with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum. Another do it yourself alternative could be using common bleach and water for cleaning mold. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using a solution of 10 parts water to one part bleach to clean mold from surfaces. Stronger formulations of bleach and water may be used, particularly to remove the discoloration caused by the mold fungi. The Wood Handbook, published by the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, recommends a solution of one part household detergent, 10 parts bleach and 20 parts warm water. The solution should be applied using a bristle brush or sponge to scrub the surface of the wood. One precaution to always take for cleaning mold and especially, when using bleach indoors, is to ensure there is adequate ventilation and wear personal protection equipment. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any detergent or cleansers that contain ammonia. When using commercial products for cleaning mold, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

Minimizing mold cleaning work

Determining whether mold is active (colorful, damp and slimy with a musty odor) or Inactive/dormant (dry and powdery) will help you decide cleaning measures.
Active mold can be colorful, and it is damp and slimy with a musty odor. Isolating materials affected by mold minimizes the spread of mold and protects those who may be having allergic or respiratory problems.

At most times mold and mildew will become a problem in your basement because of humidity and other moisture problems. Basic mold cleaning depends on finding the source and them attacking the problem later. First, in order to find the source of the problem you are going to need to understand how to look throughout the basement area. When doing an inspection for a basement, make sure to look at the carpeting and all the perimeter walls. This is a main priority to find the source of any moisture intrusion inside the basement or added area.

Most problems occur because of high humidity levels or because moisture has migrated towards the attic or basement area. Since moisture and water fall down because of gravity, it usually settles around the basement area. Basement mold cleaning really depends on attacking the source and then finding a solution to prevent the mold and mildew from coming back. When mold remediation companies attack a basement problem, they usually will have an inspection to find the mold areas.

Once they find the mold areas, nine times out of ten they will do or remove wall boards or carpeting. It is important if you have the opportunity to look behind wall boards inside the basement area. Wherever there is water stains or moisture stains, there's usually going to be mold not far behind. Water damage is usually the first cause of mold growth inside your basement. If you do take on a basement mold cleaning project, be sure to have natural cleaning products and the correct tools to properly remediate the area. Some natural cleaning products are effective to remove black mold and mildew and also prevent its growth from coming back. These types of cleaning products are known as encapsulates.

These Encapsulate are products which will block and prevent mold growth from coming back. There is safe products such as Safe Shield and Molderizer which are organic products to correctly remove and prevent mold from coming back inside your basement. Be sure to do a full inspection inside the basement area and also use correct mold remediation protocols to handle any mold removal issues.

Since you will most likely be able to find the source if you look hard in your basement. Always check out perimeter walls and carpeting. You are going to have to decide on some type of cleaning action or protocol to follow. It is always recommended to follow remediation guidelines, which can be found at http://propertyperfections.net.

But, also you will need to use natural cleaning products to not disrupt the natural environment inside your home or attic. If you were to use bleach or any other harsh chemicals, the air and chemical and harsh smell would dissipate throughout the entire home. It is important to know that at times bleach is more toxic than black mold when inhaled. For example, a mold inspector went inside a mold remediation project at the time.
He went and did a full inspection, and then was ready to do a testing. The problem was the room was so fully infected with bleach and other harsh chemicals, that the inspector had a hard time doing the testing.

No matter, he still did the inspection, but the mold remediation company failed miserably. This is because they used bleach to clean the area, and no matter how much bleach they actually used, it did remove some of the mold, but the mold came back and was liberated into the air, not cleaning any of it. So, upon the mold inspection test, the mold inspector had high read outs of black mold and other toxic mold spores. If the problem was correctly remediated using natural cleaning products and other organic cleaning products.

The basement mold cleaning project would have went a lot smoother. This type of project happens more times than not. Just remember to correctly remediated any mold issues and other building materials that have visible black mold. Carpeting, wall boards, ceiling or other building materials that may have visual staining or black mold enzymes growing on them, should and must be removed. After the removal of the products, then you are going to spray down with a liquid solution, such as Safe Shield or Molderizer to correctly remove mold and clean the area effectively.

After it is a clean, you will need to protect your family and home from black mold coming back. It is recommended to use a mold cleaning product that prevents mold as well. Mildew and mold will come back, if not shield it and correctly remediated it. It is guaranteed you will have a mold problem six months later if you do not encapsulate all building materials that were inside the mildew and mold cleaning projects. To be an effective mold remediation company, you will most likely need your tools and natural cleaning products, so you do not disrupt the natural environment of your home. These items and following the correct guidelines will assist you in your basement mold cleaning project.

Follow correct basement mold cleaning guidelines and discover which products you will need to keep basement mold from ever coming back. Have questions about mold remediation, ask mold expert Maurice.

Mold in basement

Mold can build up in basements and other wet areas causing cause health problems that can be felt immediately or have a long-term effect after excessive water damage. Thus, it becomes important to dry and clean the area as quickly as possible as well as remove unhealthy microorganisms from the air.

Causes for mold in basement

The problem of mold occurring in a basement is a common one for many homeowners. The basement is the foundation of a house and if this is poorly protected, water can soak up into the concrete, causing cracks and weakening the home's support. Using a waterproof spray and drainage board can prevent moisture from soaking up into the concrete. Since the basement handles water from roof runoff and drains water from above and below the ground, the problems get reinforced without a proper waterproofing system. In such cases, the foundation can crack under hydrostatic pressure (the force a standing fluid, such as water, exerts on the foundation walls).

Solution for preventing mold infestation in basement

A proven method of waterproofing the foundation or basement while also allowing the water to drain away from the home is by applying a waterproof asphalt coating to the foundation walls and by attaching a drainage board to the foundation. The result is two-part system that gives the foundation a strong defense against water problems.

Steps to a DIY waterproofing to prevent mold in basement

The top of the footing needs a coating of waterproofing spray before the foundation wall is set. This coating prevents water from wicking its way up through the footer and into the home. For this, the foundation walls and surface needs to be clean, dry and free of debris before the asphalt coating is applied and the plumbing/electrical lines need to be completely sealed prior to spraying evenly and consistently. The final step is to install a proper drain at the side of the footer to drain any bulk water away from the foundation. The common method for waterproofing foundation walls is to apply a damp-proof coating to the walls. This seals all gaps in the concrete without using a drainage board and although this is a simpler and cheaper method, it does not provide adequate protection from moisture buildup. As a result, it can lead to leaks, cracks and a buildup of mold. So, it is advisable to go in for the best and most affordable solution as soon as a mold in basement problem is detected to help deter mold while ensuring that the basement stays dry all year long.

I am starting a mold removal project in an old home and was told that 7% Hydrogen peroxide is one of the best products to use. Does anyone know if this is true.

There are products out there that contain Tri sodium Phosphate. (TSP) . It is made to clean mold and mildew from cement surfaces prior to painting or sealing. Usually comes in a 1 to 3 pound box as a granulation. Mix with water and apply as directed. Cost is small, maybe 4 bucks per box. Now, if you are trying to treat black mold, that is a different story. Having said that, there are plenty of crooks wanting to sell you a program to get rid of black mold for 5-10K per house. Don't fall for it.Check with experts that don't provide the service and find out for sure.

tafbutton blue16 Can 7% Hydrogen peroxide be used as a mold killer.?

I bought Tilex to get rid of a small mildew/mold problem in my tub. Just a few spots here and there. But, I have a small patch of it on my painted wall and Tilex says you can't use it on painted walls. How can I treat the mold on the wall without destroying it? Thanks.

Yes Tilex does say that it will harm painted walls but if you just wipe the area with some bleach it will remove the mold stain. Just wipe the area with clean water after wards.

tafbutton blue16 How do you remove mildew/mold stains from painted walls?

Bleach Diluted with Water. Wear a mask, gloves and protect clothing. Test area for colorfastness and use scrub brush or other suitable cleaning tool depending on what your cleaning. If it is on walls and you are willing to paint, use Kilz brand paint to keep mold out!
